Tony’s Journey after his Parkinson’s diagnosis

Case Study: Tony’s Rehabilitation Journey with PhysioFunction

Background

Tony began attending PhysioFunction in November 2022 after experiencing increasing difficulties with his balance, posture, and walking. For several years, he had noticed symptoms suggestive of Parkinson’s Disease, though initially attributed them to other causes. When a tremor developed on his left side, he sought medical advice and was formally diagnosed with Parkinson’s in February 2023 following a consultation with a neurologist.

This diagnosis coincided with Tony’s retirement from a long and fulfilling career as a gynaecology consultant, which he continued well into his 70s. The transition marked a major change in his life, both physically and emotionally.

Early Rehabilitation Goals

By the time Tony joined PhysioFunction, Parkinson’s had begun to significantly impact his mobility and independence. He experienced frequent falls, stiffness, and reduced strength, making it difficult to get up from the floor without assistance. These physical challenges were compounded by the psychological impact of the diagnosis.

Tony’s primary goals were clear: to regain strength, confidence, and independence. With the support of his therapy team, he began a structured rehabilitation programme focusing on improving his walking, posture, and balance, and he continues to work on these goals today.

Physiotherapy Interventions

Tony works closely with his Physiotherapist, Claire, and Sports Therapist, Zoe, through a tailored rehabilitation plan designed to address gait, balance, posture, and strength. His sessions include the use of specialist rehabilitation equipment such as:

  • Blazepods to improve reaction time and balance
  • Desmotec V-Line for strength training
  • PD Warrior–specific exercises for Parkinson’s management
  • Treadmill and exercise bike for endurance and cardiovascular health
  • Tidal Tank to challenge dynamic resistance, stability, and coordination

Each session ends with a touch of fun and energy - often a few rounds of boxing, which provides energy and fun and ticks many therapeutic boxes.

Beyond physical gains, Tony has noticed a significant boost in his mental wellbeing, describing his sessions as uplifting and motivating: “I feel better after every session - the positive effect lasts well into the next day.”

Life Beyond Rehabilitation

Tony’s progress has been remarkable. He now enjoys long walks, even on uneven terrain, and has regained much of his confidence and independence. His fitness improvements have inspired him to join a local gym - something he once thought impossible.

Outside of the clinic, Tony continues to pursue his passions, including gardening (especially his roses), photography, reading, and spending time outdoors - activities that have become even more enjoyable thanks to his enhanced strength, balance and self-confidence.

Why Tony Chooses PhysioFunction

Tony describes PhysioFunction as “a welcoming environment, where the team get on well and are friendly. Everybody says hello, even when they don’t treat you.” He appreciates the creativity and variety of his sessions: “No two sessions are the same.”
